چکیده

Figure 1. The ‘Kraken’ myth. Ancient tales repeatedly reported octopod-like sea-monsters attacking sea vessels. Indeed, octopuses may reach a maximum of 3 m body size, but the foundation of these ancient tales is based on giant squids (with ten rather than eight arms as depicted here) defending itself against its main predator, a sperm whale, rather than octopuses. Squids are known to leave sucker scars on young whales. These subsequently enlarge as the whale grows, which has led to overestimates of squid body lengths of more than 100 m. Distribution of Molluscs in the Eastern Persian Gulf, PG-GOOS Cruise

Distribution of molluscs in the eastern part of the Persian Gulf were studied during the PG-GOOS cruise (Oct-Nov 2012), using the 250 cm2 Van Veen grab for sampling. Sixty gastropod and 23 bivalve taxa in addition to one scaphopod taxon were identified. Gastropods constituted 80% of molluscs. The abundance of molluscs averaged 1398.36 (±261.95) ind./m2. Costellaria sp. was the most abundant ...

The Effect of Environmental Parameters (Depth and Sediment) on the Benthic Molluscs Density and Diversity in the the crater of Nayband Bay

In order to investigate the sedimentary texture, diversity and density of benthic molluscs, 55 stations at 9 transect were collected in the Nayband Bay.Samples were taken with a Van Veen grab (0.022 m2) in 3 replications in each site.Using a Particle Size Analyzer instrument revealed that the sediment texture was dominated by sand with 7 sub distinct sub sediment. Semelidae,Veneridae and Tellin...

Review of the RNA Interference Pathway in Molluscs Including Some Possibilities for Use in Bivalves in Aquaculture

Generalised reviews of RNA interference (RNAi) in invertebrates, and for use in aquaculture, have taken for granted that RNAi pathways operate in molluscs, but inspection of such reviews show little specific evidence of such activity in molluscs. This review was to understand what specific research had been conducted on RNAi in molluscs, particularly with regard to aquaculture. There were quest...

Nociceptive Biology and Evolution

Molluscs have proven to be invaluable models for basic neuroscience research, yielding fundamental insights into a range of biological processes involved in action potential generation, synaptic transmission, learning, memory, and, more recently, nociceptive biology. Evidence suggests that nociceptive processes in primary nociceptors are highly conserved across diverse taxa, making molluscs att...

Parasitism of molluscs by nematodes: types of associations and evolutionary trends.

Although there are no confirmed fossil records of mollusc parasitic nematodes, diverse associations of more than 108 described nematode species with slugs and snails provide a fertile ground for speculation of how mollusc parasitism evolved in nematodes. Current phylogenic resolution suggests that molluscs have been independently acquired as hosts on a number of occasions. However, molluscs are...

Molluscs production associated to lunar-tide cycle: a case study in Paraíba State under ethnoecology viewpoint

Molluscs have been for a long time a very important food resource for humans. Therefore, oysters, clams, and mussels are highly required at seafood markets. Like any commercial food, it is necessary that molluscs present good quality standards, concerning some criteria such as amount of meat and appearance. In bivalves, condition index or fattening index is considered a satisfactory method for ...
